A long term let at Alum Chine is a furnished flat let for 28 nights or more, with bills in the price and no fixed term, to someone who wants the quiet end of Bournemouth's beach for a season. This page covers who books them, how an owner's flat is let this way and where to find a stay now. It is the Alum Chine detail of our long term lets service.

Who stays at Alum Chine for months

  • Remote professionals who swap a city flat for a desk facing the bay, for two to six months.
  • Wintering couples, often retired, who want a lift, a balcony and the flat promenade to Durley Chine and the pier.
  • Dog owners, because the beach west of Alum Chine towards Branksome is open to dogs all year.
  • Families between homes, relocating to Bournemouth or Poole or renovating a house in Westbourne or Branksome.
  • Visiting relatives of people in hospital or at university, who want a quiet base with parking.

Looking for a stay now

The group's furnished apartments are east along the cliff on West Cliff Gardens and St Michael's Road, let for 28 nights or more with electricity, gas, water, fibre Wi-Fi, council tax, parking and the 24-hour gym included. Letting an Alum Chine flat this way

Many Alum Chine flats are furnished for summer families: sofa beds, beach kit and a small table. A long-stay guest needs a working home instead.

  • Warmth. Heating that is simple and affordable to run, and windows checked for draughts before the season.
  • A place to work. A proper table or desk and Wi-Fi that holds a video call.
  • Daily life. A washing machine, an airer or dryer, storage for two seasons of clothes, and a full kitchen.
  • Parking, or clear directions to the nearest spaces.

Before you start, read the lease, tell your lender and insurer, and plan for council tax: at the time of writing BCP Council charges a 100% premium on furnished second homes, and stays over 28 nights do not count as let nights for business rates. Our guides to long stays against tenancies and furnishing a let go further.

The local market

The Alum Chine property market

Alum Chine is the cliff top and wooded chine below Westbourne, where purpose-built blocks and converted villas sit a short walk from one of Bournemouth's quieter beaches. Flats here let to couples, older tenants and families who want the sea on foot, and sell to downsizers, second-home owners and buyers who pay for a view.

Alum Chine is a summer beach, but its flats suit stays of a month or more for a particular guest. Remote workers want a desk with a view of the bay. Couples wintering by the sea want a lift, a balcony and the promenade for a daily walk. Dog owners want the beach west towards Branksome, open to dogs all year. Families relocating or renovating a house in Westbourne or Branksome want a furnished base a short drive or walk from the work.

These guests want what a summer holiday flat sometimes lacks: heating that is cheap and simple to run, Wi-Fi for a working day, a washing machine, storage and a parking space. Westbourne's shops and buses up the chine make daily life work without a car, though most bring one.

For an owner, a long stay is a serviced let rather than a tenancy, with bills included and no fixed term. The managed blocks here often set rules on how flats may be occupied, so the lease comes first.

Who rents and buys in Alum Chine

  • A quieter beach. Alum Chine is calmer than the sand by the pier even in August. Couples and older tenants choose it for that, and buyers pay for a view of it.
  • Dog owners. The beach west of Alum Chine towards Branksome stays open to dogs all year, while the main beaches close to them in summer. Tenants with dogs look here first, where the lease allows pets.
  • Downsizers and second homes. Flats with a lift, a balcony and a sea view suit people leaving family houses and buyers from further afield who want a coastal base. They keep the sales market firm.
  • Westbourne up the hill. The village's shops and buses make an Alum Chine flat workable for daily life, so it lets for a year as readily as for a summer.

FAQs

Long term lets in Alum Chine: questions

Does Flexiestays have apartments at Alum Chine?

Not at Alum Chine itself. The group's buildings are further east along the cliff, on West Cliff Gardens and St Michael's Road, let furnished for 28 nights or more with bills, parking and gym included. The promenade links Alum Chine to them on foot.

Who books an Alum Chine flat for a month or more?

Remote workers who want a view of the bay, couples wintering by the sea, dog owners who want the year-round dog beach towards Branksome, and families relocating or renovating nearby. Most bring a car, so parking decides many bookings.

Can my summer holiday flat take long stays in winter?

Often, if the lease allows it and the flat is set up for living rather than holidaying: reliable heating, a desk, a washing machine and an airer, storage and good Wi-Fi. A guest staying a month needs different things from a family staying a week.

Is a long stay a tenancy?

Not when the guest keeps a main home elsewhere and the stay is serviced with bills included. A person who makes the flat their only home may become a tenant whatever the booking says, so we check the purpose of each stay and use the right agreement. This is not legal advice.

Does a pet-friendly flat help long stays here?

Yes, where the lease allows pets. Dog owners staying for weeks want the beach west of Alum Chine, open to dogs all year, and few furnished flats accept them. A clear pet policy and a cleaning arrangement cover the extra wear.

Lovely and cosy apartment in the centre

Lovely and cosy apartment in the centre of Bournemouth, and managing to still be quiet. Close to the train station (and buses), big Asda superstore, town centre, park and the beach. I have stayed so far in 2 different apartments in the same building on 2 separate occasions. Both, lovely decorated, with everything one may need for a short or longer stay. A kind of apartment you just want to stay in the whole day! I would definitely recommend.
