Property valuationWeymouth is the largest town in Dorset Council's area, with Georgian seafront terraces converted to flats, harbourside cottages and suburban family houses in Preston, Radipole and Wyke Regis. It rents to families, hospital and port workers and people who want the sea at a lower price than the BCP coast, and it sells to retirees, second-home buyers and families.
Weymouth is a Jurassic Coast resort with a working harbour, a long sandy beach below a Georgian esplanade and the causeway to Portland at its southern edge. It is the largest town in Dorset Council's area and the end of the line from London Waterloo. We value, market and let homes here, about an hour west of our Bournemouth office.
Renting in Weymouth
Flats in the Esplanade terraces and around the harbour let to couples, single tenants and older renters; family houses in Preston, Radipole and Wyke Regis let to families and to staff at Dorset County Hospital and Portland Port. Letting agents in Weymouth explains how we let and reference here.
Holiday lets are a large part of the town's market, so we offer holiday let management through Sea Breeze for Weymouth owners. For furnished stays of a month or more, the group's apartments are in Bournemouth with bills included (property to rent in Bournemouth).
Buying and selling in Weymouth
The town sells to retirees, second-home buyers and families, and to people who want the sea at a lower price than the BCP coast. Seafront flats sell on the view and the lease; harbour cottages on character; suburban houses on schools, gardens and parking. Many Esplanade flats are in listed terraces with shared freeholds or management companies. Selling your property in Weymouth and property valuation in Weymouth cover the detail, and our guide to selling a leasehold flat covers the lease paperwork.
Letting a property in Weymouth
At the time of writing Dorset Council charges a 100% council tax premium on furnished homes with no resident, unless a holiday let passes the business rates test. Converted terraces split into several flats can fall under HMO or building rules; check with Dorset Council for the address.
Getting around
Trains from Weymouth run to Dorchester, Poole, Bournemouth, Southampton and London Waterloo, and north to Bristol. The A354 links the town with Dorchester and runs over the causeway to Portland. Parking on the seafront and around the harbour is limited, so a flat with a space stands out.
Nearby areas
Wareham and Swanage are east along the coast in Purbeck, and our Dorset page covers the county. See estate agents in Poole for the BCP market.
Living in Weymouth
The homes.Georgian and Regency terraces along the Esplanade, most of them divided into flats; older cottages and townhouses around the harbour and on the Nothe; Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Park District and Rodwell; inter-war and post-war semis and bungalows in Preston, Radipole, Littlemoor and Wyke Regis; newer estates on the northern edge.
Transport
Weymouth station is the terminus of the main line from London Waterloo via Bournemouth and of the line from Bristol. The A354 runs north to Dorchester and south over the causeway beside Chesil Beach to Portland, and the relief road links the town with the Dorchester bypass.
Schools
State secondaries include Budmouth Academy, All Saints School and Wey Valley Academy, with primary schools across the town, and Weymouth College for further education.
Work and hospitals
Tourism, the harbour and Portland Port, the sailing academy, retail, care and the public sector are the main employers. Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester, about eight miles away, is the nearest emergency hospital, with Weymouth Community Hospital in the town.
Shops and eating
St Mary Street and St Thomas Street carry the town centre shops, the harbourside has pubs and restaurants, and Dorchester's larger shops are a short drive or train ride.
Beaches, harbour and coast
A long sandy beach runs below the Esplanade, Nothe Fort and its gardens sit above the harbour, and Portland, Chesil Beach, Lulworth and the coast path are all close. Radipole Lake and Lodmoor nature reserves sit inside the town.

Outstanding from start to finish
The apartment exceeded our expectations with its modern design and thoughtful touches throughout. Walking distance to both the seafront and shopping areas made it incredibly convenient. Clear instructions, responsive host. Would absolutely stay here again on our next visit to Bournemouth.
Modern, clean and superbly located
Lovely apartment in very close proximity to Bournemouth town centre and beach. Modern, very clean and well equipped. Onsite parking was a big plus, making it easy to explore the area. The host was very responsive and helpful throughout our stay.
Second stay, and we'll be back
Great apartment at a perfect location. Jack and the team were so easy to deal with. This is our second time at this apartment block and we'll definitely be returning. Clean, well-maintained, and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.

Estate agents in Weymouth: questions
Which council covers Weymouth?
Dorset Council, which took over from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council in 2019. Council tax, planning and housing standards go through Dorset Council, and Weymouth Town Council looks after local matters such as the beach and the parks.
Do you cover Weymouth from Bournemouth?
Weymouth is about 38 miles, or roughly an hour's drive, from our office on Charminster Road. We value and market homes here and arrange viewings, and we confirm which services we can offer for your address, and how repairs would be covered, before you instruct us.
Is there a second homes premium in Weymouth?
At the time of writing Dorset Council charges a 100% council tax premium on furnished homes that are nobody's main residence, from 1 April 2025. A holiday let available for 140 nights and let for 70 is assessed for business rates instead.
Do you manage holiday lets in Weymouth?
Yes, through Sea Breeze Property Services, our holiday let management arm, for 16% commission with no retainer. Seafront and harbourside flats suit holiday lets; check the lease first, as many converted terraces restrict short lets.
Is Portland part of Weymouth?
Portland is a separate town and island, joined to Weymouth by the causeway beside Chesil Beach. It shares Dorset Council and many services with Weymouth, and its port and the sailing academy bring tenants who often live in Weymouth or Wyke Regis.
